What Is Zcash (ZEC)?
Zcash (ZEC) is a decentralized cryptocurrency launched in 2016 by the Electric Coin Company with one defining purpose: giving users a choice between transparent and private transactions. Zcash shares part of its technical lineage with Bitcoin and follows the same maximum supply cap of 21 million coins. However, Bitcoin emphasizes transparent settlement and scarcity, while Zcash conceals transaction details when users choose its shielded address system.
The network uses zk-SNARKs, or Zero-Knowledge Succinct Non-Interactive Arguments of Knowledge. The name sounds like the beginning of a cryptography lecture, but the principle is not that complicated. It means that the network can prove a transaction is valid without revealing the underlying data. It confirms the rules were followed but doesn't expose who sent the funds, who received them, or how much ZEC moved.
To be able to perform like that, Zcash has two main address formats. A transparent address, or t-address, works similarly to a Bitcoin address. The sender, recipient, amount, and transaction history remain visible on the blockchain. A shielded address, or z-address, uses zk-SNARK technology to conceal transaction details.
