I Forgot My Password or See an “Invalid Password” Error

If you forgot your Guarda password, Guarda cannot recover or reset it. As a non-custodial wallet, we do not store your password, private keys, recovery phrase, or backup file on our servers.

Yet, losing your password does not automatically mean you've lost access to your crypto. Here’s what you can do next, depending on the recovery information you still have.

Why Does Guarda Say My Password Is Invalid?

Your Guarda password encrypts your backup file. If you see an “Invalid Password” error after importing a backup, the password and backup file don't match. This usually means one of two things:

  • you're entering a different password than the one used for that backup,
  • you've imported a different backup file.

There is no limit on password attempts, so you can try any password variations you may have used.

I Have Several Guarda Backup Files

If you've created or downloaded several Guarda backups, check each of them. Import a backup file and enter the password you believe belongs to it. If Guarda shows an “Invalid Password” error, try another backup or another password you may have used.

Guarda cannot tell you which password belongs to a backup file or recover the password from it.

I Have My Private Keys or Recovery Phrase

Your old Guarda password protects the backup file. Your private keys and recovery phrase provide access to the blockchain accounts themselves. If you still have those credentials, losing the old password does not mean losing your crypto.

Create a new Guarda Wallet with a new password and restore your assets using the recovery phrase or import individual wallets using their private keys. You can find the private key import instructions for Web and Desktop here and for Mobile here.

What If I Have None of Them?

If you don't have the correct password and cannot access your private keys or recovery phrase, Guarda cannot restore access for you. This is part of how non-custodial wallets work: only you control the information required to access your funds. There is no password reset link and no copy of your credentials stored on Guarda's servers.
