Why Did My Crypto Transaction Fail?

When you send crypto, Guarda creates the transaction and broadcasts it to the blockchain. The network then processes it. Sometimes the network accepts the transaction but cannot complete the transfer or operation, so the transaction ends up failing. A failed transaction has already reached execution, but something prevented it from completing. And yes, a failed transaction can still cost you a network fee.

Why the Failure Happens

Not Enough Gas or Network Resources

Every blockchain transaction needs resources to execute. A simple coin transfer usually needs fewer resources than a token transfer or smart-contract interaction.

Ethereum and other EVM networks use gas, with network fees generally paid in the network's native coin. If the transaction runs out of gas during execution, the network cannot complete it.

TRON uses its own resource model. Regular TRX transfers mainly consume Bandwidth, while TRC-20 transfers and smart contract operations also consume Energy. If you don't have enough available resources, the network can burn TRX to cover the cost. If there is not enough TRX either, the transaction will fail.

What to do: check the failed transaction on a blockchain explorer and look at the network fee or resources it consumed. Make sure you have enough of the network's native coin or required resources before trying again.

The Smart Contract Rejected the Transaction

Token transfers, swaps, staking, and dApp interactions often involve smart contracts. They execute according to specific conditions, and those conditions can change between the moment you submit a transaction and the moment the network processes it.

If the contract cannot execute your request under the current conditions, it can reject or revert the transaction.

What to do: check the transaction on a blockchain explorer and look for the failure or revert reason before trying again.

Why Did I Pay a Network Fee If My Transaction Failed?

Basically, the network fee pays for processing the transaction, not for guaranteeing its success. Otherwise it’d be called a happy-customer fee, but the blockchain is ruthless.

On Ethereum and other EVM networks, validators use computational resources while executing your transaction. If execution eventually fails, the work that happened before the failure still consumes gas, so you still pay for it.

TRON can make this even more noticeable. TRC-20 and other smart contract transactions consume Energy, and the network can burn TRX when your available Energy isn't enough. The transaction may also consume more resources than initially estimated. This means a TRON transaction can burn more TRX than you expected and still fail.

If a failed TRON transaction burned TRX, the network used that TRX to cover the resources consumed while trying to execute the transaction. The fee isn't the transferred amount, and the network doesn't return resources it has already consumed.

How to Check Why Your Transaction Failed

Check the transaction directly on the blockchain:

  1. Open the failed transaction in Guarda.
  2. Copy its transaction hash (TXID).
  3. Open a blockchain explorer for the network you used.
  4. Paste the transaction hash into the search bar.
  5. Check the status, failure reason, network fee or resource usage, sender, and receiving address.

What Should I Do With a Failed Transaction?

Check the failure reason first. Make sure you have enough native coins or network resources and review the transaction details before trying again. Don't immediately resend the same transaction: if you haven't fixed what caused the failure, another attempt may fail as well and charge you another network fee.
