How to Start Swapping in Guarda (plus UTXO-error)

Swapping in Guarda: How to Start and Troubleshoot

You can exchange supported cryptocurrencies directly from the Exchange section in Guarda. Choose the asset you want to send, select what you want to receive, enter the amount, and review the exchange details before confirming the transaction.

Before Guarda creates the exchange, it checks whether the amount, available balance, network fee, addresses, and other transaction requirements allow the swap to go through. Many things have to work together. If something gets in the way, you'll see an error or warning explaining what happened and if it needs your attention.

How to Swap Crypto in Guarda

To start an exchange:

  1. Open Exchange in Guarda.
  2. Choose whether you want to receive swapped crypto in your Guarda wallet or a separate address.
  3. Select the asset you want to send.
  4. Select the asset you want to receive.
  5. Enter the amount you want to exchange.
  6. Review the exchange details.
  7. Click Exchange.

Some exchanges may require an additional confirmation or signature depending on the asset, network, and wallet you use. If Guarda doesn't let you continue, find the message you're seeing below.

The Exchange Amount Is Too Low or Too High

Exchange providers set their own minimum and maximum amounts. These limits can differ by asset, pair, network, and provider.

“Must be greater than {min} {TICKER}”

Your exchange amount is below the minimum currently accepted by the provider. Increase the amount to at least the minimum shown in the message and try again.

“Must be less than {max}”

Your exchange amount is higher than the provider's current maximum. Reduce the amount below the displayed maximum before continuing. Provider limits can change, so an amount that worked for a previous exchange may not always fall within the available range.

“Insufficient Funds for the Transaction”

This message means the amount you're trying to exchange is higher than the amount currently available in your wallet. Check how much crypto you have in the wallet you're exchanging from and reduce the exchange amount if necessary. Keep in mind that depending on the network, you'll also need enough of the network's native coin to pay the transaction fee.

Network Fee Errors and Warnings

Blockchain transactions require network fees. In some cases, the asset you're exchanging and the coin used to pay the fee are different.

“Top up {wallet} wallet to pay network fee”

You don't have enough of the network's native coin to pay the transaction fee. For example, exchanging an ERC-20 token requires ETH for the Ethereum network fee. Having enough of the token itself isn't enough to send the transaction. Top up the wallet named in the message and try the exchange again.

“Can't calculate fee. Please, try again or contact support”

Guarda couldn't calculate the network fee required for the transaction. Since all the operations require constant connection with the blockchain, sometimes little puzzles in that relationship don’t work right. In that case, try the exchange again. If Guarda continues to show the same error, contact Support. We have 24/7 human support in Guarda, and our team will do their best to find the issue.

“Actual network fee may be up to {X} TRX due to energy price fluctuations…”

You may see this warning when exchanging TRC-20 tokens. The amount of TRX required for the transaction can change with the price of energy on the TRON network. The warning doesn't block the exchange, but it tells you that the actual network fee may be higher than the current estimate. Basically, it’s telling you that the exchange might not make financial sense if the fee goes up. If you don't have enough TRX when the transaction is processed, it may fail, but the network fee will still be spent.

“To send to this address, you need to pay a fee of {X} SOL for creating a token at this address”

This is an informational message for SPL tokens on Solana. The receiving address needs the appropriate token account before it can receive that SPL token. Creating it requires an additional amount of SOL, which Guarda shows in the message. You don’t have to do anything extra to create the token account.

Network-Specific Messages

Some messages only apply to particular blockchain networks.

“Not Enough Usable Outputs”

You may see an error mentioning “not enough usable outputs” when exchanging UTXO-based cryptocurrencies such as BTC, LTC, DOGE, BCH, DASH, or ZEC. Your balance on these networks isn't one single amount that Guarda can spend at once. It consists of outputs created by previous transactions. Basically, Bitcoin’s change. To create a new transaction, Guarda needs enough confirmed, usable outputs to cover both the amount you're sending and the network fee.

There are two common reasons you may see this error.

  1. Your Previous Transaction Hasn't Been Confirmed Yet.

If you recently received crypto, the incoming transaction may still be waiting for confirmation. Until the relevant output becomes confirmed and usable, Guarda is not able to use it to build your exchange transaction. Check your wallet history. If an incoming transaction is still pending, wait for it to confirm and try the exchange again.

  2. Your UTXOs Don't Cover the Transaction.

You can also see the error when your wallet has confirmed outputs, but they aren't enough to cover the exchange amount together with the network fee.

This can be confusing because your wallet balance may appear high enough at first glance. The important part here is whether Guarda has enough usable outputs to construct the transaction. Try reducing the amount you're exchanging. If you've recently received funds, also check whether any incoming transactions are still waiting for confirmation.

“After the transaction has been executed, there will be unusable outputs…”

This is another message specific to UTXO-based networks. When Guarda spends an output, the part you don't send returns to your wallet as change. If that change is extremely small, it may fall below the network's practical spending threshold and become a dust output. In other words, Guarda can create the transaction, but doing so would leave behind an amount too small to use normally. That output won’t even cover the fee to spend itself. See Dust Error: What Is It and What Can I Do? for a more detailed explanation of dust and how to handle it.

“This address is a nonce account…”

This message applies to Solana. Guarda doesn't support using a Solana Nonce Account as the source of an exchange transaction. You'll need to use a supported wallet address to make the exchange.

“This is a Watch Only address…”

A watch-only wallet lets you monitor an address without importing its private key into Guarda. Because Guarda doesn't have the private key for a watch-only address, it can't sign transactions from that address. If you need to exchange funds held there, you'll need access to the wallet that can sign transactions for it.

Hardware Wallet Messages

If you're exchanging crypto from a connected hardware wallet, Guarda may need the hardware device to sign the transaction.

“Please confirm transaction on your {device} device”

This isn't an error. Guarda is waiting for you to approve the transaction on your hardware wallet. Check the connected device and confirm the transaction there.

“Failed to sign the transaction on ERA device”

Guarda couldn't get the required transaction signature from the hardware wallet. Make sure the device is connected and unlocked, then try signing the transaction again. If you're using Ledger with Ethereum tokens, you may also need to check that your device firmware and the required Ethereum settings are up to date.

Exchange Provider Errors

Guarda uses third-party exchange providers to process swaps. A provider may sometimes reject or be unable to create a particular exchange even when the assets themselves are supported in Guarda.

“This currency pair is not available at the moment. Please try again later or another pair.”

No provider currently offers the selected exchange under the available conditions. The pair may be temporarily unavailable, the provider may no longer support the route, or the current amount may not work for the available exchange. You can try again later, change the amount, or select another exchange pair. If you want to understand why an asset or pair may disappear from Exchange, see Why Is My Asset Unavailable for Swap?

“Failed to create exchange transaction”

The exchange provider couldn't create the requested swap. For example, the provider could reject the amount or destination address. Check the exchange details and try again. If the error continues without a more specific explanation, contact Guarda Support.

“Swapzone quote expired…”

Exchange quotes don't remain valid indefinitely. If a Swapzone quote expires before you create the exchange, Guarda needs an updated rate. Refresh the quote and review the new exchange details. Then click Exchange again if you want to continue.

Errors When Swapping Through a DEX

Some token swaps require additional blockchain transactions before the exchange itself can happen.

“Something went wrong during approval”

Some EVM token swaps require you to approve the token before it can be used in the exchange. This message means the approval transaction didn't complete successfully, so Guarda can't continue with the swap yet. Check the transaction and your network fee balance before trying again.

“Failed to send the exchange transaction. Check your wallet history before trying again.”

Guarda couldn't confirm that the exchange transaction was sent successfully. Before you retry, check your wallet history first. If a transaction already appears there, don't immediately create another one. Check its status before deciding whether you need to try again.

Recipient Address Errors

When you use Exchange to: Address, Guarda also needs to validate the address where you want to receive the exchanged crypto.

“Invalid {TICKER} address”

The address you entered isn't valid for the selected receiving asset or network. Check the address carefully and make sure its network matches the network you've selected for the receiving asset.

“Network error. Please try again”

Guarda couldn't load the network information required to process the receiving address. Try again. If the error continues, contact Guarda Support.

What Should I Do If I Still Can't Make the Exchange?

First, read the exact error or warning shown in Guarda. Some problems can be fixed by changing the amount, adding the native coin required for network fees, waiting for an incoming transaction to confirm, or correcting the receiving address. If an error tells you to check your wallet history before trying again, do that before creating another transaction.

If the problem continues, contact Guarda Support and include the assets you're exchanging, their networks, the amount, the exact error message or a screenshot, and the transaction hash if one was created. This gives the team enough information to identify where the exchange stopped.
