How to Restore a Ledger Hardware Wallet

Every time we think about physical aspects, we stress about a dozen “what if” situations. What if I lose it? What if someone steals it? What if I won’t remember my PIN or recovery phrase or both? The fears are fair, but they don't always mean you'll lose your crypto.

The recovery process depends on what you still have, whether it’s your Ledger device, your PIN code, or your recovery phrase (mnemonic). When you know what each of these stands for, you know exactly what to do if something goes wrong.

Understanding Ledger Security

PIN Code

Your PIN code protects access to your particular Ledger device. It won’t emerge anywhere on the blockchain or in Guarda. But every time you connect and unlock the device, you'll be asked to enter it.

The PIN only protects the ability to use Ledger and press its buttons. It does not recover your crypto wallet or create a backup of your assets.

But here is the twist: you enter the wrong PIN several times in a row, and your Ledger automatically resets itself. This is how Ledger keeps your private keys away from prying and unauthorized eyes.

The good news is that resetting your device will not erase your cryptocurrency from the blockchain. Yes, the experience is unpleasant but completely manageable. If this happens to you, restore the wallet through the recovery phrase and then create a new PIN. But take your time to memorize it.

Ledger Device

The description says that “the Ledger hardware wallet is the device that stores your private keys and signs transactions. The private keys never leave the device and stay shielded from malware and online threats.”

And that’s true. But the device itself is replaceable. If it's lost, damaged, or stops working, you can restore the same wallet on another hardware device using your recovery phrase.

If you restore your recovery phrase in another compatible wallet, make sure it uses the same derivation path. Otherwise, your accounts may not appear even though your assets are still safe on the blockchain.

Recovery Phrase (Mnemonic)

The recovery phrase is the most important part of your Ledger wallet. When you first set up the device, Ledger generates a recovery phrase consisting of 12 or 24 words. This phrase is the master backup for every account created on that Ledger. If something happens, the recovery phrase allows you to restore the wallet and regain access to your cryptocurrency.

Anyone who knows your recovery phrase can restore your wallet on another Ledger device and control your assets. Never share your recovery phrase with anyone, including Guarda Support or Ledger Support.

Recovering Your Ledger

I Forgot My PIN

After several incorrect PIN attempts, your Ledger automatically resets itself. If you still have your recovery phrase, losing your PIN is not a disaster.

To restore access:

1. Turn on the Ledger.
2. Choose Restore from Recovery Phrase.
3. Enter your 12- or 24-word recovery phrase.
4. Create a new PIN code.

Once the recovery is complete, you'll have access to exactly the same wallet addresses and assets as before.

My Ledger Was Lost, Stolen, or Damaged

If your Ledger is no longer available, you can restore the wallet on another Ledger device.

During the setup process:

1. Choose Restore from Recovery Phrase.
2. Enter your recovery phrase.
3. Create a PIN.

Because your private keys are recreated from the recovery phrase, you'll regain access to the same blockchain addresses and balances if the derivation path is correct.

I Lost My Recovery Phrase

This is the only situation where your wallet becomes permanently unrecoverable.

If your Ledger has been reset, lost, or damaged and you no longer have your recovery phrase, neither Guarda nor Ledger can restore access to your wallet. Non-custodial companies do not store a copy of your recovery phrase or private keys. Without the recovery phrase, there is no recovery procedure.

Use Ledger Safely

• Write your recovery phrase on paper and store it offline.
• Keep more than one secure copy in separate locations.
• Never photograph or upload your recovery phrase to cloud storage.
• Never share your recovery phrase or private keys with anyone.
• Keep your Ledger firmware updated.
• Remember that neither Guarda Support nor Ledger Support will ever ask for your recovery phrase.
