What is Ethereum Name Service?
Ethereum Name Service (ENS) is a protocol for naming wallet addresses, hashes, and other machine-readable identifiers. The operation of this protocol makes it possible to turn hard-to-read strings of data into easy-to-read addresses. ENS works similarly to the Domain Name System (DNS) used for Web sites. The protocol calls itself a 'distributed, open and extensible naming system' that offers decentralized, blockchain-protected domain naming and lookup services. Due to its decentralized nature, ENS is not controlled by any single organization. This makes ENS more secure than centralized naming services. Because ENS is a fully decentralized, open-source protocol, it is not controlled by a higher authority. The protocol is managed by the community as a DAO (decentralized autonomous organization).
The ENS DAO is managed by the ENS token, a protocol management token used to submit proposals and votes to influence the future development of the protocol. Anyone who owns ENS can vote on ENS DAO proposals.
